On this Women’s Day, let us remember Madhavi, the less-known yet extraordinary woman of the Mahabharata. Born with a divine boon to bear kings, she was bartered between rulers and sages, her life dictated by the pride of men. Yet, she remained unshaken—choosing sacrifice over self, kindness over resentment, and forgiveness over pain. Like a deer in the wilderness, she endured, giving without expecting and proving that true strength lies in compassion.
This poem, Mrigacharini, is a tribute to her silent resilience, a reminder that even in the shadows of history, the light of a woman's endurance shines forever.
"She who roams like a deer,"
"Untouched by fear.
Her silence whispers to the wind,
Which bends to kiss her feet—
Feet that carry a heart,
A heart that forgives.
Her boon bore four kings,
Yet made her a token of trade,
Caught between a father’s pride
And a sage’s unyielding will.
She gave herself, without regret,
A sacrifice of boundless grace.
One traded for eight hundred,
Kindness exchanged for gratitude,
Gratitude of a sage unknown—
So was her kindness, unseen.
White horses with black-marked ears,
And she who walks like a deer—
Is that all one needs to endure
A world driven by endless desire?
She chose compassion over self.
As the wheel of time turns on,
She bears her pain in the forest,
Sharing her merits with her fallen father,
A daughter’s love, a soul untamed.
She who lives like a deer,
With a heart that forgives.
Mrigacharini—Live like a deer. "
